Bureau 13, Stalking the Night Fantastic is a game set in modern
times. It is a game of supernatural espionage. Similar to both the
X-Files and Ghostbusters, the players take on the part of an agent
working for a super secret branch of the government known as Bureau
13. Your job is to ferret out the supernatural and determine if it
has a place in the ecosystem of the area. If it does, make sure the
public doesn’t discover it. If it is harmful, remove it without
alerting the people around you to it. The Bureau has 5 simple rules
for its agents to follow:
1. Don’t get caught
2. Don’t leave evidence
3. Use violence only if necessary
4. Cover your tracks
5. Make them believe a rational explanation for the bizarre or
fantastic
A GM can make the game as dark or as light-hearted as they want to,
though I have heard that some GM’s consider Bureau 13 to be the
most violent game with the highest player character attrition rate
of any game.
Bureau 13 is owned by Richard Tucholka, the genius behind Tri
Tac Games. He is known as the Grand Guru of Gaming and is well
known in gaming circles throughout Michigan. Besides being a great
game designer, he is one heck of a nice guy, probably one of the
nicest in the industry. Bureau 13 is currently in its third
edition, though a d20 version is in the works and is due anytime
now. There is very little difference between the first and third
editions. The main differences are minor rule tweaks, better
packaging and progressively better artwork. The cover of the third
edition was done by none other than Phil Foglio. Modules for other
horror games can easily be adapted for use with Bureau 13. We
eagerly await the newest edition. Bureau 13 is an easy to learn
system and can be made as difficult or as easy as desired. With the
charts and tables in the book, it can easily be made as realistic
as the GM wants, or played as a fast-play game. We highly recommend
this game for both beginners and veterans of roleplaying.
